WPS Office is the suite people install when a machine needs to open documents properly without giving up several gigabytes of disk and a long setup. Writer, Spreadsheets and Presentation cover the same ground as the three applications everyone already knows, and the file handling is native rather than an import filter, so a document written elsewhere opens with its styles, tables and headers where the author left them.

The tabbed shell is the part that changes how the suite feels day to day. Every open document, workbook and deck lives in one window as a tab rather than scattering itself across the taskbar, and dragging a tab out into its own window works the way it does in a browser. On a laptop screen that alone removes most of the window juggling a working day involves.

Compatibility work goes well beyond the desktop formats. The suite reads and writes the common document, workbook and presentation formats in both their modern and legacy variants, exports to PDF without a separate printer driver, and pastes cleanly in and out of browser based editors, which is where most documents now start their life anyway.

The bundled extras are more useful than they usually are in a suite this size. There is a PDF viewer with annotation and page management, a document repair pass for files that will not open, a template gallery covering the usual business layouts, and a backup centre that keeps rolling copies of anything edited so an accidental overwrite is recoverable.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Close any other office suite that is currently running before starting setup.
2. Extract the archive to a folder with a short path and no spaces.
3. Run the installer as administrator and choose the interface language.
4. Decide during setup which file types the suite should associate itself with.
5. Open the settings panel afterwards and turn off the startup helper if it is not wanted.
