Overview

About uTorrent Pro

uTorrent's defining trait has always been its size. The client is a few megabytes, runs quietly in the tray, and uses almost nothing while managing dozens of active transfers. On a machine that leaves a client running permanently, that footprint is the whole argument.

The transfer management is thorough for something so small. Per-torrent and global speed limits, priority ordering across the queue, file selection so only wanted items inside a torrent download, sequential ordering, and a bandwidth scheduler that shifts limits by hour so the connection is left alone during the working day.

The Pro build removes the advertising panels and adds the features layered on top: streaming playback while a transfer is still running, a built-in player and converter for common formats, and an integrated scanning step that checks completed files before they are opened.

The rest is protocol level control that matters on a restricted connection: port configuration with mapping, encryption settings, peer exchange and DHT toggles, IP filtering, and a web interface for driving the client from another machine on the network. Labels and folder rules sort completed transfers automatically.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Uninstall any previous version, keeping the settings folder if the transfer list should be preserved.
  2. Run the installer as administrator.
  3. Decline any optional bundled offers on the setup screens.
  4. Set the download and completed folders on first launch.
  5. Configure the listening port and enable mapping so incoming connections are reachable.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Are there advertising panels in the Pro build?
No. The advertising panels are removed in this build.
Why are transfers slow?
Usually the listening port is unreachable. Enable mapping or forward the port on the router.
Can it stream before completion?
Yes, streaming playback works while a transfer is still running.
Does the settings folder survive an upgrade?
Yes, if it is left in place during uninstall the transfer list and settings are picked back up.
