Topaz DeNoise AI

Noise reduction that separates grain from real detail rather than smoothing both, which is what makes a high sensitivity frame usable instead of merely quieter.

Overview

About Topaz DeNoise AI

Conventional noise reduction is a compromise: every setting that removes more noise also removes more detail, and the operator picks a point on that curve. This tool was trained to tell the two apart, so grain in a flat sky is removed while feather edges, fabric weave and eyelashes survive. On a frame shot at high sensitivity the difference is not a cleaner picture, it is a usable one.

Several processing modes are available because noise is not one problem. The standard mode handles ordinary high sensitivity noise, a severe mode is meant for very heavy noise where a conventional pass would destroy the image, a low light mode targets the mixture of noise and colour blotching that appears in dark frames, and a raw specific mode works on undemosaiced data where the result is cleanest.

The interface is built around comparison rather than sliders in isolation. Split and side by side views show the original against the processed version at full magnification, all modes can be previewed at once on the same crop so the right one is chosen by looking rather than guessing, and manual control over noise reduction strength, detail recovery and sharpening is there when the automatic estimate is not right.

It fits into an existing workflow rather than replacing one. It runs standalone for a folder of frames, registers as a plugin in the common host editors and returns the result as a layer, and batch processes an entire shoot with one setting. The intended position is early, on the raw frame before other edits, which is where noise reduction always belongs.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Detail preserving noise reduction trained to separate grain from real texture
  • Multiple processing modes including standard, severe noise, low light and raw
  • All modes previewed at once on the same crop for choosing by comparison
  • Split and side by side comparison views at full magnification
  • Manual control over strength, detail recovery and sharpening
  • Raw specific processing on undemosaiced data for the cleanest result
  • Batch processing across an entire shoot with one saved setting
  • Standalone application plus a plugin path into common host editors
Changes

Changed in version 3.7.2

  • Improved detail retention on fine texture such as fabric and hair
  • Faster processing on current generation GPUs
  • Better handling of colour blotching in very dark frames
  • Additional camera raw formats supported directly
  • Reduced memory use during batch runs on high resolution files
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the current graphics driver from the GPU vendor before starting.
  2. Close any host editor so the plugin registers correctly during setup.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.
  4. Select the plugin targets when the installer offers them.
  5. Let the first launch finish preparing its processing components before opening a frame.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Where does it belong in a workflow?
Early, on the raw frame before sharpening and other edits. Noise reduction after sharpening fights itself.
Does it need a GPU?
It runs on the processor alone, but slowly. A dedicated card with 4 GB or more makes it practical.
Is a connection required?
No. Processing runs locally once the components are prepared on first launch.
Can a whole shoot be processed?
Yes. Choose a mode on one representative frame and run the folder as a batch.
