Overview

About Adobe Lightroom Classic

Lightroom Classic is built around a catalogue, and that is the whole reason to use it. Files stay where they are on disk while the catalogue holds the previews, the ratings, the keywords and every edit as a set of instructions. Nothing is written back into the original file, so a decision made on import can be reversed a year later with no loss at all.

The develop module is a full raw processor. Exposure, tone curve, colour mixer, masking, lens corrections, transform and detail all operate on the raw data rather than a rendered image, and the AI-assisted masks select sky, subject, background and skin without a manual brush pass. A correction made on one frame syncs across a whole selection in one step.

Where it earns its place is volume. A card of two thousand frames imports with a develop preset and keywords already applied, flags and colour labels cut it down to a selects folder in one pass, and smart collections keep rebuilding themselves as ratings change. The library module is genuinely a database, not a folder browser.

Output covers the end of the job: export presets with resize, sharpening and watermarking per destination, soft proofing against a printer profile, and book, slideshow and web modules for delivery. Catalogues move between machines cleanly, which matters when editing starts on a laptop and finishes on a workstation.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection until installation finishes.
  2. Extract the archive to a short folder path.
  3. Close any running Adobe process, including background helpers.
  4. Run setup as administrator and choose the interface language.
  5. Store the catalogue on a fast internal drive, not on a network share.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Where should the catalogue live?
On a fast internal drive. Catalogues on network shares corrupt and are not supported.
Are edits written into the raw files?
No. Edits live in the catalogue, with optional sidecar files for portability.
Can it hand a frame to Photoshop?
Yes, and the returned file comes back into the catalogue stacked with the original.
Does it import from an existing catalogue?
Yes, older catalogues upgrade on first open, and the original is left in place untouched.
