Overview

About Skylum Luminar Neo

Luminar Neo takes the opposite approach to a traditional developer. Instead of exposing thirty controls and expecting the user to know which four matter, it analyses the frame and offers a small number of large moves that do the work of a whole adjustment stack. A landscape gets its atmosphere back on one slider, a portrait gets its light shaped on another, and the underlying corrections are applied as a set rather than one at a time.

Relighting is the standout. The editor builds a depth understanding of the scene, which lets the foreground and the background be lit separately without any selection work at all. Pulling a subject out of shadow while leaving the sky where it is takes one control, and because it is depth based rather than tonal, it does not drag every other dark area along with it.

Sky replacement is the other headline, and it is more careful than the name suggests. The new sky is masked into the frame with the horizon edge handled around trees and buildings, then the scene relights to match the direction and colour of the replacement, and reflections in water are handled as part of the same operation rather than left obviously wrong.

Underneath the automatic work there is a full manual editor: raw development, curves, colour grading, dodge and burn, structure, local masking with brushes and gradients, and a layer stack where every edit stays live. Presets bundle a whole look and apply with adjustable strength, and a batch pass runs the same look across a folder. It works standalone or as a plugin inside a host editor.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection until installation finishes.
  2. Extract the archive to a folder with a short path.
  3. Close any host editor so the plugin registers during setup.
  4. Run the installer as administrator and select the plugin targets when offered.
  5. Let the first launch finish preparing its processing components before opening a file.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does it replace a catalogue application?
Not really. It manages a working folder rather than a full library, so it fits best beside a catalogue tool.
Do the automatic tools need a connection?
No. The analysis runs locally once the processing components have been prepared on first launch.
Are the edits non-destructive?
Yes. Every adjustment stays live in the layer stack and can be unwound or restrengthened later.
Can it be used as a plugin?
Yes, it registers into a host editor and returns the result as a layer.
