Overview

About Rhinoceros 8

Rhino is the modeller people reach for when the geometry has to be exact and the file has to leave the building afterwards. The core is a NURBS kernel, so a surface is defined mathematically rather than as a mesh of triangles, and a curve drawn to a tolerance stays at that tolerance through every trim, fillet and offset that follows. For product design, jewellery, marine work and architectural detailing that difference decides whether a part can actually be machined.

The translation side is the other half of the argument. Rhino reads and writes an unusually wide format list including IGES, STEP, SAT, DWG, DXF, OBJ, STL, 3DM and SketchUp files, which makes it the piece of software that sits between packages that otherwise refuse to speak to each other. A model arriving from a CAD department opens, gets cleaned up, and leaves as a mesh the render team can use.

Grasshopper ships inside the installer rather than as a separate download. It is a visual node environment for parametric modelling, so a component can be defined by relationships instead of fixed coordinates and then regenerated at a hundred variations by dragging one slider. A large amount of the current computational design work in architecture is built on it.

The rest of the application is deliberately unopinionated. There is no forced project structure, no assembly tree to fight, and no feature history to break. Layers, named views, blocks and worksessions handle organisation, SubD objects handle the loose shape work that NURBS is bad at, and the built in render engine handles presentation images without a third party plugin.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • NURBS surface and solid modelling with tolerance based trimming, filleting and offsetting
  • SubD objects for organic shape work that convert cleanly back to NURBS surfaces
  • Grasshopper visual programming environment bundled in the installer
  • Wide import and export list covering IGES, STEP, SAT, DWG, DXF, OBJ, STL and 3DM
  • Mesh repair, analysis and remeshing tools for cleaning up imported geometry
  • Layouts with detail views, dimensions, hatching and annotation for drawing sets
  • Built in raytraced render engine with materials, environments and decals
  • Open plugin architecture with a scripting layer for Python and command macros
Changes

Changed in version 8.34.26223.11001

  • Faster display pipeline on large assemblies with many blocks
  • Improved STEP import handling of trimmed surfaces from older CAD exporters
  • SubD to NURBS conversion produces cleaner surface patches
  • Grasshopper component library extended with additional mesh operations
  • Reduced memory use when working with dense scanned meshes
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection before extracting, since modelling installers are routinely flagged on heuristics.
  2. Extract the archive to a short folder path with no spaces in the name.
  3. Run the setup executable as administrator and pick the interface language.
  4. Let the plugin registration stage finish rather than closing the window early.
  5. Reboot once so the file associations for 3DM and the viewer thumbnails register.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does Grasshopper need a separate install?
No. It is part of the main installer and appears as a command inside the application.
Will it open a STEP file from a CAD department?
Yes, and the import tolerance can be set before the read so the surfaces arrive joined rather than as loose faces.
Can older 3DM files be opened?
Yes, and files can be saved back to earlier versions from the save dialog when a machine on the job runs an older release.
Are third party plugins supported?
Yes. Plugins built for this release load normally, though version locked plugins may need a rebuild.
