Overview

About Pixologic ZBrush 2026

ZBrush handles geometry densities that ordinary modelling packages simply refuse. Its internal representation lets a sculpt run into the tens of millions of polygons while still responding to the brush, which is what makes it possible to work skin pores, fabric weave and surface damage directly rather than faking them with a texture map later.

The brush set is the interface. Move, clay, dam standard, trim and inflate cover the bulk of the shaping work, alphas and stroke types turn any brush into a surface detail tool, and masking by cavity, curvature or polygroup restricts a stroke to exactly the region intended. Dynamesh and sculptris mode keep the topology usable while the form is still changing.

Getting the sculpt out is as important as making it. ZRemesher rebuilds a clean quad topology automatically, the projection tools transfer the high detail onto that new mesh, UV master unwraps without leaving the application, and displacement, normal and colour maps bake for use anywhere else. For physical output the decimation and thickness tools prepare a mesh that will actually print.

Around all of that sit the organisational tools that make a long sculpt manageable: subtools for separating parts, polygroups for isolating regions, layers for non-destructive passes of detail that can be dialled back, and a history that survives across sessions. The interface takes a while to learn and then gets out of the way entirely.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Sculpting at tens of millions of polygons with a responsive brush
  • Large brush set with alphas, stroke types and cavity or curvature masking
  • Dynamesh and adaptive tessellation for reshaping without topology problems
  • ZRemesher automatic quad retopology with detail projection onto the new mesh
  • UV unwrapping and displacement, normal and colour map baking inside the application
  • Polypaint for painting colour without needing a UV layout first
  • Subtools, polygroups and sculpt layers for non-destructive detail passes
  • Decimation and thickness tools for preparing meshes for physical output
Changes

Changed in version 2026.2.1

  • Faster ZRemesher on meshes with heavy surface detail
  • Improved brush responsiveness above twenty million polygons
  • Additional alphas and brushes added to the default set
  • Better handling of very large subtool counts in one project
  • Reduced project save times on dense sculpts
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection and extract the archive to a short path.
  2. Run setup as administrator.
  3. Install any bundled runtime components the setup offers rather than skipping them.
  4. Set the scratch and project folders on a fast internal drive on first launch.
  5. Configure the pen tablet pressure curve before starting any real sculpting.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Is a pen tablet required?
Not technically, but sculpting with a mouse is unpleasant enough that a pressure sensitive tablet is effectively required.
Does it need a powerful GPU?
Less than most 3D packages. Memory and processor matter more here than graphics card memory.
Can the sculpt be used in other software?
Yes. Retopologise, bake the maps and export the low polygon mesh with its displacement and normal maps.
Are older project files supported?
Yes, older files open and are upgraded on load.
