Overview

About NI Multisim Professional

Multisim puts a schematic editor and a SPICE simulator in the same window, which changes how a circuit gets designed. Instead of building a board and finding out that a rail sags under load, the circuit is drawn, the simulation is run, and a virtual oscilloscope is dropped onto a node to see what is actually happening there. The parts that fail do so on screen, at no cost.

The instrument set is the part that makes it approachable. Oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, spectrum analysers, bode plotters, logic analysers and word generators attach to the schematic the way bench equipment attaches to a breadboard, with the same controls in roughly the same places. Anyone who has used the bench versions is productive within an afternoon.

Analysis goes well past what a bench gives you. DC and AC sweeps, transient analysis, Fourier, noise, distortion, temperature sweeps, Monte Carlo and worst case runs all report on the same circuit, so component tolerance and thermal drift can be checked before a prototype exists. The Professional edition adds the deeper analyses and the larger component database.

The component libraries carry thousands of real parts with manufacturer models rather than generic idealised ones, and custom parts can be built from a model file when a specific device is missing. Completed designs pass into layout tooling with the netlist and footprint assignments intact, so schematic capture is not wasted work.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Schematic capture with an integrated SPICE simulation engine
  • Virtual instrument set including oscilloscope, function generator and spectrum analyser
  • DC, AC, transient, Fourier, noise and distortion analyses
  • Monte Carlo, worst case and temperature sweep analysis for tolerance work
  • Large component library with manufacturer supplied device models
  • Custom component creation from model files for unlisted parts
  • Mixed analogue and digital simulation in a single schematic
  • Netlist and footprint export into board layout tooling
Changes

Changed in version 14.3

  • Component database expanded with additional current devices
  • Faster convergence on circuits with switching regulators
  • Improved probe handling on schematics with many nodes
  • Better plot rendering for long transient runs
  • Reduced project load times on large hierarchical designs
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection for the length of the installation.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path with no spaces in the folder name.
  3. Run setup as administrator and select the Professional feature set when prompted.
  4. Allow the bundled runtime components to install rather than skipping them.
  5. Reboot once, then confirm the component database loads before starting a design.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Is the component database included?
Yes. The full library ships in the installer rather than downloading on first launch.
Can a design be taken to a board layout?
Yes. The netlist with footprint assignments exports into layout tooling directly.
Why will a simulation not converge?
Usually switching elements with no series resistance. Adjust the analysis tolerances or add realistic parasitics.
Does the Professional edition matter?
It carries the deeper analyses, including Monte Carlo and worst case, plus the larger part database.
