Microsoft Office 2007

The release that introduced the ribbon and the current file formats, kept around for old hardware and for documents that will not open cleanly anywhere else.

Overview

About Microsoft Office 2007

Office 2007 is the release that changed the shape of the suite. The ribbon replaced menus and toolbars, and the XML based file formats that everything still uses today arrived here for the first time. Anyone opening a document created in that period is opening a format this release wrote, which is a good part of why it is still downloaded at all.

The reason people actually install it now is hardware. It runs comfortably on machines with a gigabyte of memory and a single core processor, which covers a lot of older laptops, workshop machines and equipment controllers that will never take a modern suite. On those machines the choice is not between this and a current release, it is between this and nothing.

Feature wise it is a complete suite rather than a stripped one. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher are all here, along with the charting engine that was rebuilt in this release, conditional formatting in Excel with data bars and colour scales, SmartArt diagrams across the suite, and the print preview and page setup tools that were reorganised alongside the ribbon.

It coexists poorly with newer releases and should be treated as the only suite on a machine. Compatibility with current documents is generally good in both directions, though newer functions and chart types degrade when a file written by a current release is opened here, so anything moving between generations should be checked once rather than assumed.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Remove any other Office release first, since generations of the suite conflict over shared components.
  2. Disable real-time protection until setup completes.
  3. Extract the image and run the setup executable as administrator.
  4. Choose a custom install and deselect any applications that are not wanted.
  5. Reboot once, then open Word to confirm the suite launches cleanly.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Will it open documents from a current release?
Generally yes. Newer functions and chart types degrade, so check any file that crosses generations once.
Can it sit alongside a newer Office?
No. Remove other Office generations before installing this one.
Is there a 64-bit build?
No. This release predates the 64-bit suite and is 32-bit only.
Why install this rather than something current?
Old hardware. It runs on machines a current suite will not install on at all.
