Overview

About IBM SPSS Statistics

SPSS is the statistics package for people whose job is research rather than programming. Every procedure is reachable from a menu with a dialog that names its options in plain terms, and the output arrives as formatted tables and charts in a separate viewer window rather than as console text that has to be interpreted before it can be read.

The data editor is a spreadsheet with a second sheet behind it describing the variables themselves: type, measurement level, value labels, missing value codes and formatting. That variable view is what separates it from a spreadsheet, because a coded response of three is displayed and reported by its label rather than as a number nobody remembers the meaning of six months later.

The procedure library is broad. Descriptives and frequencies, comparison of means and the whole analysis of variance family, correlation and regression including logistic and ordinal models, factor and cluster analysis, reliability testing, non parametric tests, survival analysis and time series forecasting are all present. This build carries the full module set rather than the base package with the advanced procedures locked out.

Everything done through a dialog also writes syntax, which is the feature that makes an analysis reproducible. Pasting a dialog to syntax records exactly what was run, a syntax file re-runs a whole analysis on updated data in one action, and the output viewer exports tables and charts into a document with the formatting intact rather than as screenshots.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Menu driven access to the full statistical procedure library
  • Data editor with a separate variable view for types, labels and missing value codes
  • Output viewer producing formatted tables and charts rather than console text
  • Comparison of means, analysis of variance and the full regression family
  • Factor, cluster and reliability analysis with non parametric alternatives
  • Survival analysis and time series forecasting procedures
  • Syntax pasted from any dialog so an analysis is reproducible and re-runnable
  • Export of tables and charts into documents with formatting preserved
Changes

Changed in version 27.0.1 IF026

  • Interim fix pack rolled into the installation image
  • Faster processing on data files with very large case counts
  • Improved chart rendering in the output viewer
  • Corrected several dialog labels across interface languages
  • Better import handling for spreadsheet and delimited text sources
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Remove any earlier release of the package before starting.
  2. Disable real-time protection until the install completes.
  3. Extract the image to a short path and run setup as administrator.
  4. Select the interface language during setup rather than changing it afterwards.
  5. Reboot once, then open the data editor to confirm the procedure menus are fully populated.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Are the advanced modules included?
Yes. This build carries the full module set rather than leaving the advanced procedures locked.
Can it read a spreadsheet directly?
Yes, along with delimited text and the common database sources, with variable properties set during import.
Is syntax required?
No. Everything runs from dialogs, but pasting to syntax is what makes an analysis reproducible later.
Does it handle very large files?
Case counts in the millions are workable given enough memory, though performance depends heavily on the procedure.
