Deep Glow 2 for After Effects

A glow effect that works in linear light and falls off the way a real lens does, replacing the flat halo the built-in glow produces.

Overview

About Deep Glow 2 for After Effects

The glow that ships with After Effects has a specific look, and everyone who has used it recognises it instantly: a hard ring around bright areas that stops abruptly instead of falling away. Deep Glow exists because that is not how light behaves in a lens. It converts the image to linear colour, spreads the highlights across a wide radius with a physically shaped falloff, and composites the result back so bright areas bloom into the surrounding frame gradually.

The practical difference shows up most on text, logos, UI elements and anything with hard edges against dark plates. A title with Deep Glow applied reads as emitting light rather than having a halo drawn around it, and the effect scales sensibly with composition size, so a design built at high definition still looks right when the same project is rendered at ultra HD.

The controls are deliberately short. Radius and exposure set the spread and intensity, a threshold picks which parts of the image contribute, chromatic aberration and dispersion add lens character, and a composite dropdown chooses how the glow lands back on the source. Presets cover the common looks so a usable result is one click away before any tuning starts.

Version 2 rebuilt the render path around the GPU, which changes how it fits into a workflow. Wide radius glows on large compositions that previously forced a prerender now scrub close to real time, and the effect can sit on an adjustment layer above an entire stack without turning the timeline into a series of green bars waiting to cache.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Linear light glow processing with physically shaped falloff rather than a hard ring
  • GPU accelerated render path for wide radius glows on large compositions
  • Composition size aware scaling so a look survives a change of output resolution
  • Threshold control for choosing exactly which parts of the image contribute
  • Chromatic aberration and dispersion controls for lens character
  • Composite mode dropdown for how the glow lands back on the source layer
  • Preset library covering the common title, logo and screen glow looks
  • Works on adjustment layers above an entire stack rather than per layer only
Changes

Changed in version 1.1.1

  • Rebuilt GPU render path with large speed gains at wide radii
  • New preset set aimed at screen and interface elements
  • Improved behaviour when applied to layers with existing transparency
  • Fixed a banding artefact visible on very dark gradients
  • Reduced memory use on compositions above ultra HD
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Close After Effects completely before starting, including any background render process.
  2. Extract the archive to any folder with a short path.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and let it detect the installed host versions.
  4. Confirm the plugin folder path it offers matches the host release actually in use.
  5. Launch After Effects and find the effect under the stylise category in the effects panel.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Which host versions are supported?
The installer detects installed releases and offers each one it finds. Recent release years are all covered.
Does it need the project set to linear?
No. It converts internally, so it behaves the same in an eight bit project as in a thirty two bit one.
Will the effect survive on a machine without the plugin?
No. Any machine opening the project needs the plugin installed or the layer renders without it.
Is a GPU required?
Not strictly, but the accelerated path is the reason version 2 is fast. On CPU only the wide radii are slow.
