About Chaos V-Ray for 3ds Max

V-Ray is the renderer that a very large share of architectural and product visualisation work goes through, and it installs into the host modelling application rather than running on its own. Once registered it replaces the render dialog, adds its own material, light and camera types, and takes over the viewport preview, so the modelling environment stays the same while everything downstream of it changes.

The interactive preview is the part that changes daily work. Adjusting a light, a material roughness or a camera exposure updates a progressively refining image in a docked panel while the scene is still being edited, so lighting decisions get made against something close to the final result rather than against a guess followed by a twenty minute test render.

The material system is physically based and deliberately conservative. Metals, glass, coatings, subsurface and translucent materials all behave predictably under changed lighting, and a large bundled library of ready made materials means most surfaces do not need to be built from scratch. The camera model uses real exposure, aperture and shutter values, so photographic instincts transfer directly.

Output is built for production. Render elements split the image into passes for compositing, the frame buffer carries a full colour correction and comparison stack, distributed rendering spreads a single frame across several machines, and the bundled standalone renderer takes an exported scene without needing the host application present on the render node.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the host modelling application first, since this registers into it rather than standing alone.
  2. Close the host completely, including any background render node process.
  3. Disable real-time protection and extract the archive to a short path.
  4. Run setup as administrator and tick the host versions present on the machine.
  5. Reopen the host and select the renderer in the render setup dialog on first launch.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.
