Chaos Corona for 3ds Max
A physically based renderer for the modelling host, aimed at photographic interior and exterior work with very few settings to get wrong.
About Chaos Corona for 3ds Max
The argument for this renderer has always been the same one: it produces photographic results with almost no settings exposed, and the settings that exist mostly do not need touching. For architectural interiors, where competing renderers demand a page of sampling parameters tuned per scene, that is a large practical advantage on a deadline.
The interactive render session is where most of the work happens. It runs continuously in a window while the scene is edited, so materials, lights and camera position are judged against the actual result rather than a rough preview. It refines progressively, meaning a usable image appears in seconds and simply gets cleaner the longer it is left, and there is no fixed end point to wait for.
The material system is deliberately small. One physical material covers almost every surface through a handful of parameters, with layered variants for coatings, and the light material for emissive surfaces. Because it is physically based, values transfer between scenes and between lighting setups without needing to be rebuilt each time.
Post processing sits inside the render window rather than in another application. Exposure, highlight compression, white balance, bloom, glare, sharpening and a tone curve all apply live and can be adjusted after the render has finished without recomputing anything, and render elements come out separated for anyone taking the image into a compositor.
What is included in this build
- Progressive interactive rendering that refines continuously while the scene is edited
- Physically based sampling with very few exposed settings to tune
- Single physical material covering most surfaces with layered coating variants
- Physical sun, sky and light sources with real world units
- Live post processing for exposure, bloom, glare, white balance and tone curve
- Post adjustments applied after rendering without recomputation
- Separated render elements for finishing in a compositor
- Distributed rendering across several machines on a network
Changed in version 15.2
- Faster convergence on interiors lit only through small openings
- Improved denoising detail retention on fabric and foliage
- Additional layers exposed on the physical material
- Better memory handling on scenes with very high polygon counts
- Reduced startup time for the interactive session
Installation walkthrough
These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.
- Confirm the host modelling application is installed and has been launched once.
- Close the host completely, including any background processes.
- Extract the archive and run the installer as administrator.
- Select the host version the plugin should register with during setup.
- Open the host, set the renderer in the render settings, and confirm the material library loads.
