Overview

About Blender

Blender covers the entire 3D pipeline in a single application, which is unusual enough that people coming from a studio toolchain take a while to believe it. Box modelling, sculpting at millions of polygons, UV unwrapping, retopology, rigging with weight painting, physics and cloth simulation, particle and hair systems, two production renderers, node compositing and a working video sequencer are all in the same window, sharing one scene and one file format.

Rendering is split between Cycles and EEVEE. Cycles is a path tracer with proper light transport, GPU acceleration across current hardware, adaptive sampling and the AI denoiser, and it is what final frames go through. EEVEE is a rasteriser that gets close enough in the viewport for lookdev and for whole projects that do not need physical accuracy, and it plays back in real time rather than in minutes per frame.

The node systems are what keep it flexible. Shader nodes build materials procedurally, geometry nodes generate and scatter geometry from rules rather than by hand, and compositing nodes handle the render passes after the fact. A scattering setup written once as a node group can be reused across scenes without touching a single vertex again.

File handling suits real projects. Assets link between blend files with library overrides, the asset browser holds materials, node groups and objects for drag and drop reuse, and the importer set covers the usual interchange formats so geometry moves in and out of other packages without a conversion tool in the middle.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Complete pipeline covering modelling, sculpting, UVs, rigging, animation and simulation
  • Cycles path tracer with GPU acceleration, adaptive sampling and AI denoising
  • EEVEE real time renderer for lookdev and for full projects that do not need path tracing
  • Geometry nodes for procedural generation, scattering and non-destructive modelling
  • Shader and compositing node editors sharing one node interface
  • Sculpting with dynamic topology, multiresolution and a full brush set
  • Grease pencil for 2D drawing and animation directly inside the 3D scene
  • Asset browser with linked libraries and overrides for reuse across projects
Changes

Changed in version 5.2.0

  • Faster Cycles rendering on current generation GPUs with improved memory handling
  • Geometry nodes gains additional mesh and curve operations
  • Sculpt mode performance improved on very high polygon meshes
  • EEVEE shadow and reflection quality raised at the same frame cost
  • Importer set updated for newer interchange format revisions
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the current graphics driver from the GPU vendor before first launch.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path on a drive with several gigabytes free.
  3. Run the installer as administrator, or use the portable folder if no install is wanted.
  4. Select the GPU rendering backend in preferences before starting any real work.
  5. Set the temporary and asset library folders so caches do not land on the system drive.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does it need a dedicated GPU?
It runs on integrated graphics, but Cycles rendering and heavy viewport work are transformed by a dedicated card.
Can it open files from an older release?
Yes. Older blend files load, though files saved in this release will not open in earlier versions.
Is the video sequencer usable for real edits?
For short pieces and for assembling renders, yes. A long form cut is still better handled in a dedicated editor.
Where do add-ons go?
The add-on folder in the user profile. Installing from preferences copies them there automatically.
