Inventor is built for parts that have to be made. Every model starts as a constrained sketch and grows through features that stay editable, so a dimension changed at the end of a two hundred feature part propagates through everything that depends on it. That history is the difference between a model that can be revised and one that has to be rebuilt when the specification moves.

Assemblies are where the package earns its place. Components are placed and constrained against each other rather than positioned by coordinate, so the assembly moves the way the real mechanism would, interference between parts is detected before anything is cut, and a driven part updates when the component it references changes. Large assemblies use a simplified representation so a machine with a thousand components still opens.

The specialised environments cover the manufacturing methods that need their own rules. Sheet metal models with real bend allowances and unfolds to a flat pattern that can be sent to a press, weldments carry preparation and bead geometry, frame generator builds structural members from a skeleton, and the tube and pipe environment routes runs with correct bend radii.

The Professional level adds the analysis and documentation on top: stress and modal simulation, dynamic simulation of moving mechanisms, tolerance analysis, and a drawing environment that produces a dimensioned, ballooned and annotated drawing set with a parts list generated straight from the assembly rather than typed in by hand.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Install the current graphics driver from the GPU vendor before starting.
2. Disable real-time protection and extract the archive to a short path.
3. Run setup as administrator and let the content library stage complete.
4. Choose the standards library and units during setup, since it sets the default templates.
5. Reboot once, then set the project folder before opening any assembly.
