About Autodesk Fusion 360

Fusion 360 covers the whole path from an idea to a manufactured part inside one application. Modelling, assembly, simulation, rendering, drawing production and machining toolpaths are workspaces within the same environment rather than separate products, so a design change propagates through to the drawing and the toolpath instead of requiring each to be redone.

Modelling is parametric with a timeline. Every operation is recorded in order and can be reopened and edited, so a dimension changed at the start of a part rebuilds everything that followed it. Sketches are constrained rather than merely drawn, direct modelling handles imported geometry with no history, and freeform surface tools cover the shapes that parametric operations do not suit.

Assemblies use joints rather than mates, which is a small difference that turns out to matter. Components are joined by the motion they actually have, so a mechanism moves in the assembly and can be checked for interference and range before anything is manufactured. Motion studies animate the result for review.

The manufacturing workspace generates toolpaths for milling, turning and cutting, with tool libraries, stock definition, simulation of the cut and post processors for a wide range of machines. Simulation covers static stress, modal, thermal and buckling analysis, and the rendering workspace produces presentation images from the same model without export.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection until the install has finished.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path on a drive with 15 GB free.
  3. Close any other Autodesk application and its background helper.
  4. Run setup as administrator and choose the interface language.
  5. Reboot once, then set the local project folder before starting work.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.
