The standard parts library is the largest single time saver. Screws, nuts, washers, bearings, pins, seals and structural shapes are all present against the common international standards, and inserting one places a correctly sized, correctly represented component rather than a block that has to be checked by hand. Change the size and every view of it updates.

The generators go a step further and calculate rather than just draw. Shaft, spring, cam and belt generators size a component against the load and speed given, then produce the geometry and the calculation record together. For routine machine elements this collapses a design pass and a drafting pass into one operation.

Annotation and documentation follow standards rather than habit. Dimensioning, fits and tolerances, surface texture symbols, welding symbols and datum references all come from the selected drafting standard, and the bill of materials builds itself from the components actually present in the drawing, with balloons that stay tied to their rows.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Disable real-time protection for the duration of the install.
2. Extract the archive to a short path on a drive with at least 25 GB free.
3. Close any other Autodesk application and its background licensing helper.
4. Run setup as administrator and select the drafting standard during configuration.
5. Reboot once, then launch and confirm the mechanical ribbon is present.
