Overview

About Adobe XD

XD was built for one job: designing interfaces and then proving they work before anyone writes code. Artboards represent screens, the design surface stays fast even with a hundred of them open, and the prototype tab turns the same document into something clickable by dragging connections between screens rather than rebuilding it in a separate tool.

Components and states carry the system side. A button drawn once becomes a component with hover, pressed and disabled states, and every instance across every screen updates when the master changes while still allowing local overrides for text and imagery. Stacks and padding handle layout that has to respond to content length rather than sitting at fixed positions.

The prototyping model goes beyond simple screen links. Auto animate matches objects between two artboards and interpolates the difference, which produces a genuine transition from two static screens, and component states fire on hover, tap, drag and keyboard input. Scroll groups, overlays, fixed headers and voice triggers cover the interaction patterns real interfaces use.

Handoff and specification work sits at the end. Design specs generate measurements, colour values, type styles and downloadable assets for the people implementing the design, repeat grid fills a list from a folder of content in one drag, and plugins extend the application into charting, content generation, accessibility checking and asset management.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Artboard based screen design that stays responsive across large documents
  • Components with hover, pressed and disabled states and per instance overrides
  • Stacks and padding for layout that adapts to changing content length
  • Auto animate producing real transitions between two static artboards
  • Interaction triggers for tap, hover, drag, keyboard and voice
  • Scroll groups, overlays and fixed position elements
  • Repeat grid filling lists from a folder of content in a single drag
  • Design specs generating measurements, styles and downloadable assets
Changes

Changed in version 61.0.12.1

  • Faster rendering on documents with several hundred artboards
  • Improved auto animate matching on nested component instances
  • Additional export presets for common screen densities
  • Plugin panel loading made faster on large plugin sets
  • Reduced memory use during long prototyping sessions
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection until the install has finished.
  2. Extract the archive to a short folder path.
  3. Close every Adobe process including background helpers.
  4. Run setup as administrator and pick the interface language.
  5. Install any wanted plugins after the first launch rather than before.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does prototyping need a separate tool?
No. Design and prototype live in the same document and switch with a tab.
Can it import from other design tools?
Common interchange formats import, though complex effects usually need adjusting afterwards.
Do plugins work offline?
Installed plugins run locally. Browsing for new ones needs a connection.
Can specs be shared without an account?
Specs generate locally and export as a folder of assets and measurements for handing over directly.
