Overview

About Adobe Substance 3D Painter

Painter puts the texture work on the model rather than on a flat UV sheet. Brushes paint across seams as though the surface were continuous, the result previews under real lighting in the viewport, and every channel of a physically based material set is painted at once instead of being assembled from separate maps afterwards.

The layer stack is the reason it replaced older texturing workflows. Materials, masks, filters and generators stack like layers in an image editor, and nothing is ever baked down until export. Change a base colour thirty layers deep and everything above it updates, and a smart material carrying dirt in the crevices and wear on the edges reapplies itself correctly the moment the mesh is swapped for a newer version.

Generators are what make that possible. Baked mesh maps including curvature, ambient occlusion, thickness and position drive procedural masks, so edge wear finds the actual edges of the model and grime settles into the actual cavities. The result reads as observed rather than painted, and it survives a topology change without a repaint.

Export is built for handing off. Preset configurations write out the exact map set a given engine or renderer expects, at the resolution and channel packing it wants, across every texture set in the file in one pass. UDIM workflows, multiple texture sets and per-set resolution are all handled without splitting the project.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Paint directly on the model with brushes that cross UV seams seamlessly
  • Non-destructive layer stack of materials, masks, filters and generators
  • Smart materials that reapply correctly when the underlying mesh is replaced
  • Mesh map baking for curvature, ambient occlusion, thickness, normal and position
  • Procedural generators driving edge wear, dirt and grime from baked mesh data
  • Physically based viewport preview under image based lighting
  • UDIM support with multiple texture sets and per-set resolution
  • Export presets writing the exact map set and channel packing a target engine expects
Changes

Changed in version 12.1.0.552

  • Faster baking on high polygon source meshes
  • Improved handling of very large UDIM sets
  • Additional smart materials added to the starter library
  • Viewport lighting presets reorganised for quicker comparison
  • Reduced project load times on files with deep layer stacks
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the current graphics driver before starting, since the viewport is GPU dependent.
  2. Disable real-time protection and extract the archive to a short path.
  3. Close any running Adobe process from Task Manager.
  4. Run setup as administrator and choose the interface language.
  5. Point the shelf and library folder at a fast internal drive on first launch.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Can the model be updated mid project?
Yes. Reimport the mesh and the layer stack reapplies, with generators recalculating against the new bakes.
Does it export for a specific engine?
Yes. Export presets cover the common engine and renderer map sets, including channel packing.
Is a dedicated GPU required?
Effectively yes. Baking and the viewport both lean on it heavily.
Are UDIMs supported?
Yes, with multiple texture sets in one project and independent resolution per set.
