Overview

About Adobe Fresco

This is the drawing application for a machine with a stylus. The interface is built for a pen in one hand and a hand resting on the screen, with the tool panels collapsed to the edges and gestures for undo, and the canvas stays under the pen rather than under a set of floating windows.

Three brush families live in the same document, which is the central idea. Raster brushes behave like a conventional painting application, vector brushes produce strokes that stay editable and scale without softening, and the live media brushes model watercolour and oil physically so paint bleeds into wet areas, mixes at the edges where two colours meet and dries over time. A sketch can start in vector, take paint on a layer above it, and finish with raster texture.

Layer handling covers what a drawing actually needs: masks, clipping, blend modes, group opacity and layer specific transforms, with a selection set that includes lasso, magic wand and a selection brush. Symmetry and perspective guides constrain strokes to an axis or a vanishing point, and shape assist snaps a rough stroke into a clean geometric form.

Files move cleanly to the rest of a pipeline. Documents export with layers intact for finishing in a full editor, flatten to standard image formats for delivery, and the time lapse recording captures the whole drawing session as a video without needing separate capture software running.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Pressure and tilt sensitive input with palm rejection and gesture shortcuts
  • Raster, vector and physically behaving live media brushes in one document
  • Watercolour and oil brushes that bleed, mix and dry over time
  • Full layer stack with masks, clipping, blend modes and layer transforms
  • Lasso, magic wand and selection brush with editable selections
  • Symmetry and perspective guides plus shape assist for clean geometry
  • Export with layers intact for finishing in a full editor
  • Time lapse recording of the whole drawing session as a video
Changes

Changed in version 5.7.0.1447

  • Lower latency between pen movement and stroke rendering
  • Faster performance of the live media brushes on large canvases
  • Additional brush presets added to the default set
  • Improved handling of very large documents on machines with limited memory
  • Fixed a case where layer masks did not carry through on export
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the tablet or stylus driver first and confirm pressure works before setup.
  2. Pause real-time protection until installation completes.
  3. Extract the archive to a short folder path and run setup as administrator.
  4. Close any other Adobe process, including background helpers.
  5. Set the canvas default size and the pen pressure curve on first launch.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Is a stylus required?
Not strictly, but the whole design assumes pressure sensitive input and a mouse loses most of what makes it worth using.
Do the live media brushes need a fast machine?
They are the heaviest tool in the application. On a modest machine keep the canvas size reasonable.
Can documents open in a full editor?
Yes, layered, with raster layers arriving as expected and vector layers rasterised on the way in.
Is the time lapse recording automatic?
Yes, the session is captured in the background and exported as a video afterwards.
