Overview

About Adobe Dimension

Dimension exists for the designer who needs a photographic product visual and does not want to learn a full three dimensional package to get one. Models are placed in a scene, artwork is applied to their surfaces, an environment provides the lighting, and the renderer produces an image that reads as a photograph rather than as a rendering.

Applying artwork is the part that fits an existing workflow. A label or packaging design made in a vector or raster editor drops straight onto a model surface and wraps correctly around curves, with the placement adjustable interactively. Changing the artwork updates the scene without rebuilding anything, which is what makes iterating on a design practical.

Lighting is handled through environment images and adjustable sources rather than by building a studio setup from scratch. The environment sets the overall light, reflection and background at once, sun position and intensity adjust directly, and the match image feature analyses a supplied background photograph and orients the scene lighting and camera to agree with it.

Output covers both a finished flat image and a layered one. Rendering can hand back a composite ready for delivery, or separate passes for material, depth and lighting that can be recombined and adjusted in a raster editor afterwards. Interactive rendering previews the result in the viewport while the scene is being adjusted.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Scene composition with model placement, cameras and adjustable lighting
  • Artwork applied directly to model surfaces with correct wrapping on curves
  • Environment image lighting with adjustable sun position and intensity
  • Match image analysis orienting the scene to a supplied background photograph
  • Material library with adjustable roughness, metalness and transparency
  • Interactive viewport rendering while the scene is being adjusted
  • Output as a finished composite or as separate render passes
  • Import of the common three dimensional model exchange formats
Changes

Changed in version 4.1.8.4754

  • Faster final rendering on machines with capable graphics hardware
  • Improved artwork wrapping on tightly curved surfaces
  • Additional materials and environments in the bundled library
  • Better handling of imported models with high polygon counts
  • Reduced memory use on scenes with many objects
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Disable real-time protection until the install completes.
  2. Extract the archive to a short path with no spaces.
  3. Close every Adobe process, including the background helper.
  4. Run setup as administrator and choose the interface language.
  5. Reboot once, then set the render cache location on a fast internal drive.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does it model geometry?
Not really. It composes and renders scenes using models brought in from elsewhere or from the bundled library.
Can artwork be updated after placing?
Yes. Replacing the artwork file updates the scene without redoing the placement.
Are render passes available?
Yes, output can be a flat composite or separate passes for compositing afterwards.
Does rendering use the GPU?
Yes, and a capable card makes a substantial difference to final render times.
