Overview

About Telegram Desktop

Telegram Desktop is a full client rather than a companion to a phone. History lives in the cloud and synchronises across every signed in device, so a conversation continues on a workstation exactly where it stopped on a handset, and a machine that has been offline for weeks catches up in seconds rather than starting empty.

File handling is the practical reason a lot of people keep it installed. Transfers go up to a very large per file ceiling, files stay available in the chat history rather than expiring, and anything sent can be downloaded again later from any device. For moving a large project folder to someone without setting up a share, it is usually the shortest route.

Groups and channels scale far beyond a normal chat window. Groups hold very large member counts with administration tools, permissions and slow mode, while channels broadcast to an unlimited audience with view counts and comment threads. Bots extend both with automated posting, forms and integrations driven from an open interface.

The desktop client itself is lightweight and behaves like a native application. Multiple accounts run side by side in one window, folders sort chats into tabs, message search is instant across the entire history, and the whole thing is small enough to install on a machine that is short on space without a second thought.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Extract the archive to any folder with a short path.
  2. Run the installer as administrator, or use the portable build from a removable drive.
  3. Sign in with the account and confirm the session from an already signed in device.
  4. Choose the interface language and the download folder from settings.
  5. Turn off automatic media downloading if the connection is metered.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.
