Overview

About Smadav Pro 2026

Smadav is deliberately not a replacement for a main protection suite. It is a small second layer designed to run alongside one without the two fighting, and its focus is narrow: removable drives, autorun behaviour, hidden folder and shortcut infections, and the specific family of nuisances that spread through shared sticks in offices and print shops.

The removable drive handling is the whole point. Plugging in a stick triggers an immediate scan, hidden folders that an infection replaced with shortcuts are restored rather than deleted, and the autorun entry is neutralised before anything executes. On machines that take drives from the public all day, that alone justifies keeping it installed.

Resource use is the other design goal. It runs from a very small footprint with no heavy scanning engine loaded permanently, so it does not add measurable load to a machine that is already running a full suite. There is no background updater hammering the connection either, since the detection set is small and updates infrequently.

The extra tools are aimed at cleanup after the fact. A process manager shows what is running with the ability to end and block an entry, a registry cleaner repairs the specific keys these infections tend to break, and an admin mode allows scanning from a command line for anyone maintaining a room full of machines.

Changes

Changed in version 15.8.2

  • Updated detection set for current removable drive nuisances
  • Faster scanning on drives with very large file counts
  • Improved folder restoration on drives with deep directory trees
  • Reduced false positives on portable application folders

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Extract the archive to any folder with a short path.
  2. Run the installer as administrator.
  3. Leave the existing protection suite installed, since this is intended to run beside it.
  4. Set the automatic removable drive scan behaviour from settings on first launch.
  5. Add any portable application folders to the exception list to avoid false positives.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does it replace a main protection suite?
No. It is a second layer and is designed to run alongside one rather than instead of it.
Will it conflict with an existing suite?
It is built specifically to avoid that, since it does not load a full resident scanning engine.
Why does it flag portable applications?
Portable folders sometimes match its heuristics. Add them to the exception list once and it stops.
Does it need frequent updates?
No. The detection set is small and focused, so updates are infrequent by design.
