AMAN VPN
An encrypted tunnel client with a server list, a kill switch and split tunnelling, aimed at connecting once and forgetting about it rather than configuring anything.
About AMAN VPN
A tunnel client has one job, which is to put an encrypted connection between the machine and the wider network so that everything between the two, including whoever runs the local access point, sees nothing but ciphertext. This one is built around doing that with as little configuration as possible: open it, pick a location or take the recommended one, and the connection is up in a few seconds.
The server list is organised by location with a load indicator and a latency reading beside each entry, so a slow one can be avoided before connecting rather than after. Favourites pin the locations that get used repeatedly, the client can reconnect to the last server on launch, and a specialised set of servers is available for connections that need to stay stable over long sessions.
The protection features are the ones worth checking are enabled. The kill switch blocks all traffic if the tunnel drops, which is the difference between a brief interruption and quietly continuing unprotected. Leak protection keeps name resolution inside the tunnel rather than leaking it to the local network, and auto connect brings the tunnel up on untrusted networks without being asked.
Split tunnelling is what makes it liveable day to day. Applications can be listed to bypass the tunnel or to use it exclusively, so a local backup or a printer keeps working on the local network while a browser stays tunnelled. Protocol selection, a local network access toggle and connection statistics round out the settings, and the client stays out of the way once it is configured.
What is included in this build
- Encrypted tunnel with a one click connect and a recommended server
- Server list organised by location with load and latency indicators
- Kill switch blocking all traffic if the tunnel drops
- Name resolution leak protection keeping lookups inside the tunnel
- Auto connect on untrusted networks
- Split tunnelling with per application include and exclude lists
- Protocol selection and a local network access toggle
- Connection statistics with throughput and session duration
Changed in version 2.3.2
- Additional server locations added to the list
- Faster reconnection after a network change
- Improved kill switch reliability on sleep and resume
- Better throughput on high latency connections
- Reduced idle resource use for the background service
Installation walkthrough
These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.
- Close any other tunnel client, since virtual adapters and routing rules conflict.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Allow the virtual network adapter to install when the operating system prompts.
- Enable the kill switch and leak protection before the first connection.
- Configure the split tunnelling lists for local backup, printing and any application that must stay off the tunnel.
