iTop VPN
A tunnelling client with a wide server list, split tunnelling per application and a kill switch that cuts traffic the moment the tunnel drops.
About iTop VPN
The client does the ordinary job of a tunnelling application without making a project of it: pick a location from a list, connect, and outbound traffic leaves through that server instead of the local connection. The server list is grouped by purpose as well as by country, so a location optimised for throughput can be chosen separately from one picked for a particular region.
Split tunnelling is the setting worth configuring first. Applications can be listed to always go through the tunnel or always bypass it, which keeps a local network printer, a banking site or a latency sensitive application on the direct route while everything else is tunnelled. The rules are per executable rather than per site, so they hold regardless of which browser is open.
The kill switch closes the obvious hole. If the tunnel drops, traffic is blocked at the adapter rather than silently falling back to the plain connection, and it stays blocked until the tunnel comes back or the switch is turned off deliberately. There is also a start-with-system option so a machine never sits connected outside the tunnel after a reboot.
Around that sit the usual supporting pieces: protocol selection between the modern tunnelling protocols, a DNS setting that keeps lookups inside the tunnel, a connection log that can be cleared, and a browser privacy pass that clears stored traces on demand. The interface stays a single window with one large connect control rather than a dashboard.
What is included in this build
- Wide server list grouped by region and by intended use
- Split tunnelling with per-application include and exclude rules
- Kill switch that blocks traffic at the adapter when the tunnel drops
- Selectable tunnelling protocol with an automatic option
- DNS handling that keeps lookups inside the tunnel rather than leaking to the local resolver
- Start with system and auto connect on untrusted networks
- Connection log that can be reviewed and cleared
- Browser privacy pass that clears stored traces on demand
Changed in version 7.6.0.6921
- Additional server locations added to the list
- Faster connection times on the automatic protocol setting
- Split tunnelling rules now survive an application path change
- Improved stability when switching between wireless networks
- Reduced memory use while idle in the notification area
Installation walkthrough
These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.
- Close any other tunnelling client, since two virtual adapters will fight over the route table.
- Extract the archive and run the installer as administrator.
- Allow the virtual network adapter to install when the system prompts.
- Enable the kill switch and configure split tunnelling before first use.
- Reboot once so the adapter and the startup entry register correctly.
