Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers
The onboard audio driver package with the control panel included, for the machines where the generic driver gives sound with no jack detection and no effects.
About Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers
Almost every desktop motherboard and a large share of laptops use a Realtek audio codec, and the driver the operating system installs by itself is a generic one. It produces sound, which is enough for most people to assume everything is fine, but the jack detection, the channel configuration, the microphone processing and the whole control panel are simply absent until the proper package goes on.
The difference shows up in the details. Front panel headphone jacks that stayed silent start working, the machine asks which device was plugged in rather than guessing wrong, surround configuration becomes selectable instead of being stuck at stereo, and microphone level and boost gain a control that does not clip. On a rebuilt machine this is usually the driver that fixes half the reported audio complaints.
The control panel is where the useful settings live: speaker configuration and per channel testing, room correction, equaliser and environment presets, loudness equalisation, microphone noise suppression and echo cancellation, and jack retasking so a rear input can be repurposed. Sample rate and bit depth are set per device rather than being forced globally.
The package covers both the older control panel and the newer application based one, and picks whichever matches the running system so it installs cleanly on an old machine and on a current one from the same download. It is a driver package, so a reboot is part of the process and any external audio interface should be handled by its own vendor driver rather than this one.
What is included in this build
- Full onboard codec driver rather than the generic operating system fallback
- Jack detection with a prompt for what was plugged in
- Speaker configuration up to surround with per channel testing
- Equaliser, environment presets, room correction and loudness equalisation
- Microphone noise suppression, echo cancellation and level control
- Jack retasking so inputs and outputs can be repurposed
- Per device sample rate and bit depth selection
- Both the classic control panel and the newer application included
Changed in version 6.0.9998.1
- Codec support extended to additional current motherboard models
- Improved front panel jack detection reliability
- Fixed audio dropouts after resuming from sleep on some chipsets
- Better coexistence with third party audio interfaces
- Reduced installer size after component cleanup
Installation walkthrough
These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.
- Uninstall any existing audio driver package and reboot before starting.
- Extract the archive and run the setup executable as administrator.
- Let the installer remove the previous driver when it offers to, then allow the reboot it asks for.
- After the reboot, open the control panel and set the speaker configuration and jack behaviour.
- Leave any external audio interface on its own vendor driver rather than this package.
