Overview

About Opera Browser

Opera has spent years bolting things into the browser that most people install extensions to get, and the result is a browser that is useful straight out of the installer. Ad and tracker filtering is built in and switchable per site, the traffic proxy routes browsing through a chosen region without any configuration, and both sit in the same settings panel rather than in three separate extensions fighting each other.

The sidebar is the part that changes daily use. Messenger services pin there and stay logged in beside the page rather than eating a tab, and player controls for streaming audio services live in the same strip. Workspaces split tabs into named groups, so a research session and a support queue stay in the same window without turning into forty indistinguishable favicons.

Underneath it is Chromium, which means extension compatibility and rendering behaviour match everything else in that family, and developer tooling is the standard set. Import brings bookmarks, history and saved passwords across from another browser during the first run.

The rest is quality of life accumulated over a long product life: a search-in-tabs command palette, a snapshot tool for grabbing part of a page, a pop out video player that floats above other windows, battery saver mode on laptops, and a startup page that can be pared back to almost nothing if none of that is wanted.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Close any running browser windows before starting setup.
  2. Extract the archive to any folder with a short path.
  3. Run the installer as administrator to register the browser for all users.
  4. Choose whether to import bookmarks and passwords on the first-run screen.
  5. Turn on ad filtering and pick a proxy region from settings if either is wanted.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.
