Overview

About DLC Boot

There is a category of problem that cannot be solved from inside the operating system, because the operating system is the thing that is broken. DLC Boot is the answer to that: a bootable environment on a stick that brings up a working desktop from removable media and gives access to every drive in the machine while nothing on those drives is running.

The tool set covers the usual recovery sequence. Partition managers resize, move, merge and rebuild partition tables. Imaging tools clone a failing drive to a healthy one sector by sector or capture a full backup before anything risky is attempted. Boot repair tools rebuild the boot configuration and the master boot record, which fixes a large share of machines that hang before the login screen ever appears.

When the problem is data rather than boot, the recovery tools undelete files, scan for lost partitions and pull readable sectors off a drive that is beginning to fail. Password reset clears a forgotten local account so a machine can be reached again, and the registry editor reaches offline hives to undo a change that stops the system loading.

Diagnostics sit alongside all of it: memory testing, drive health and surface scanning, temperature and stress testing, and hardware identification for a machine whose specification nobody wrote down. The environment also carries a browser and a file manager, so notes can be looked up and files copied off to an external drive without leaving it.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Bootable maintenance desktop that runs entirely from removable media
  • Partition management including resize, move, merge and table rebuild
  • Drive imaging and sector by sector cloning to a replacement disk
  • Boot repair for boot configuration data and the master boot record
  • Data recovery, undelete and lost partition scanning
  • Local account password reset and offline registry editing
  • Memory testing, drive health checks, surface scans and stress testing
  • Hardware identification, file manager and browser inside the environment
Changes

Changed in version 2023 v4.3

  • Updated storage controller drivers so current NVMe drives are seen at boot
  • Refreshed tool versions across the partitioning and recovery sets
  • Improved UEFI boot reliability on recent firmware
  • Faster environment load from USB 3 media
  • Corrected interface scaling on high resolution panels
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with a standard imaging tool.
  2. Confirm the target machine is set to boot from removable media in its firmware.
  3. Boot the stick and choose the environment that matches the machine, UEFI or legacy.
  4. Image the failing drive before running any partitioning or repair tool on it.
  5. Copy recovered data to an external drive rather than back onto the drive being repaired.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does it need installing?
No. It boots from the stick and runs in memory. Nothing is written to the machine unless a tool is told to write.
Will it see an NVMe drive?
Yes, the current storage drivers are integrated. Very new controllers occasionally need the legacy environment instead.
Is the machine's data at risk from booting it?
Booting alone changes nothing. The risk comes from partitioning tools, so image the drive first.
Can it reset a Microsoft account password?
No. The reset tool clears local account passwords only.
