Overview

About DiskGenius Professional

Disk work usually arrives as an emergency. A partition table is damaged, a drive shows as unallocated, a laptop needs moving to a larger drive tonight, or somebody emptied a folder that had the only copy of something in it. This covers all of those from one interface rather than needing four separate tools installed under pressure.

Partition operations are the everyday half: resize, move, split, merge, create, format, hide, change the identifier, convert between the older and newer partition schemes, and align partitions correctly on solid state drives. Operations queue and apply together, and the ones that cannot be done from a running system are handed to a reboot stage automatically.

Recovery is the half that gets it installed in a hurry. Deleted files are found by scanning the file table, and a formatted or corrupted volume is reconstructed by scanning for file signatures across the raw surface. Found data is previewed before recovery, which avoids a long restore that turns out to contain nothing useful, and recovery always writes to a different drive.

The rest is inspection and duplication: a sector editor for looking at raw structures, a health panel reading drive attributes and bad sector counts, sector by sector or used-space-only cloning, image files of a whole drive or a single partition, and a bootable rescue environment written to a USB stick for machines that will not start at all.

  • Sector by sector or used-space-only cloning between drives
  • Whole drive and single partition image files with restore
  • Drive health panel reading attributes, temperature and bad sector counts
  • Bootable rescue environment written to a USB stick
Changes

Changed in version 6.2.0.1829

  • Faster signature scanning on very large volumes
  • Improved handling of drives with damaged partition tables
  • Additional file signatures added to the recovery set
  • Better cloning performance to and from NVMe drives

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Close any application holding files open on the drives that will be touched.
  2. Extract the archive and run setup as administrator, since disk access requires it.
  3. Build the bootable rescue stick before it is needed rather than during an emergency.
  4. Back up anything irreplaceable before running a partition operation.
  5. Recover files onto a different physical drive from the one being scanned.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Can it recover from a formatted drive?
Often, provided nothing has been written since. Signature scanning finds files even with the file table gone.
Should recovered files go back to the same drive?
Never. Writing to the drive being recovered destroys the data still waiting to be found.
Does resizing a partition lose data?
It should not, but an interrupted operation can. Take a backup or an image before starting.
Will it run without administrator rights?
No. Direct disk access requires elevation.
