This release stays in circulation for one reason, which is hardware. Machines from its era have drivers written for it and nothing newer, capture cards and industrial interfaces ship with signed drivers that later releases refuse, and licence dongles from that period often work here and nowhere else. On that class of machine this is not nostalgia, it is the only image that boots to a working system.

It is also genuinely light by current standards. The memory footprint at idle is small, it boots quickly on hardware with a spinning disk, and it runs comfortably on two gigabytes where a current release struggles. For a machine driving a single instrument or a single application, that efficiency is the whole argument.

The Professional edition carries the management pieces rather than the consumer subset: full disk encryption, policy management, remote desktop hosting, virtualisation and domain join. The desktop, file browser and application compatibility are all conventional, and the start behaviour can be set to boot straight to the desktop rather than the tile screen.

The image is multilingual and carries both architectures, which matters more here than on a current release because a significant amount of the hardware this gets installed on is 32-bit only. It writes to a USB stick or an optical disc, boots on UEFI and legacy firmware, and offers both a clean install and an in-place upgrade at setup.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Back up everything on the target machine first, since a clean install erases the system partition.
2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger, or burn it to optical media for very old machines.
3. Boot from the media using the firmware boot menu.
4. Choose the interface language and the 32-bit or 64-bit path at the start of setup.
5. Install chipset, graphics and network drivers from the hardware vendor afterwards, since generic drivers only get the machine running.
