There is a whole class of machine that will never run a current desktop release acceptably: netbooks, industrial panel PCs, workshop machines driving a single piece of equipment, and older laptops with two gigabytes of memory soldered in. This image exists for those. The service pack is integrated, the component store has been trimmed hard, and the result boots to a usable desktop on hardware that would otherwise sit in a cupboard.

The trimming is aggressive rather than cosmetic. Sample media, speech components, the tablet stack, most of the language resources and the bundled games are gone, and the search indexer and several background services are disabled by default. What remains is the shell, the driver stack, networking and the parts a working machine actually touches, which is why the memory footprint at idle is a fraction of the stock install.

The Professional edition base matters because of what it keeps: Remote Desktop hosting, domain join, the encrypting file system and the older backup tooling. A machine on a small network still behaves like a member of that network rather than an isolated box.

The obvious caveat is that this is old software running on an old servicing model. It belongs on a machine that either stays off the network or sits behind one, driving a scanner, a lathe, a legacy dongle-locked application or a piece of test equipment whose vendor stopped writing drivers a long time ago.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Back up anything on the target machine. A clean install erases the system partition entirely.
2. Write the image to a USB stick of 4 GB or larger with a standard imaging tool.
3. Enter the firmware boot menu and select the stick, switching to legacy boot if the machine needs it.
4. Choose a clean install onto the wiped system partition rather than an upgrade.
5. Install chipset, graphics and network drivers from the hardware vendor after the first boot.
