This image saves the two longest jobs in setting up a machine by doing them together. The desktop operating system and the full office suite install in one pass, so a system comes up with a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation tool and a mail client already present rather than needing a second download and another half hour after first boot.

The platform requirement checks are removed, which is the practical reason this image gets used at all. Hardware that a stock installer refuses on the security module or processor generation check installs normally here, so a perfectly capable older workstation stays useful rather than being written off over a firmware feature it does not have.

The operating system side is the Professional edition, so the pieces the Home edition leaves out are present: drive encryption, policy management, remote desktop hosting, virtualisation and domain join. The servicing stack is integrated, meaning the first update pass after installation is short instead of taking most of an afternoon.

The office suite included is the Professional Plus set rather than a home bundle, which means the database and publishing applications are there alongside the core four. Both are configured before the first boot completes, so the machine is genuinely ready to work rather than ready to start downloading.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Back up everything on the target machine first, since a clean install erases the system partition.
2. Write the image to a USB stick of 16 GB or larger with a standard imaging tool.
3. Boot from the stick, using the firmware boot menu if the machine does not pick it up.
4. Choose the interface language, then install onto the wiped system partition.
5. Install chipset, graphics and network drivers from the hardware vendor after first boot.
