Overview

About Windows 10 Lite

This is a stripped image, and the point of it is memory and disk. The optional applications, the store framework, the telemetry services, the search indexer and most of the background tasks are removed rather than disabled, so a machine with four gigabytes of memory and a spinning disk boots to a usable desktop in a fraction of the time a standard image manages.

It comes in more than one flavour inside the same download. The superlite build is the most aggressive removal, aimed at genuinely old hardware or a machine that runs a single fixed application. The compact build additionally applies file compression to the system files, which trades a little processor time for a much smaller footprint on a small solid state drive.

The trade is real and worth understanding before writing it. Removed components do not come back through the normal update path, some optional features cannot be added afterwards, and applications that depend on the removed frameworks will refuse to install. For a general purpose machine that is the wrong choice. For a workshop machine, a media box, a till or a test bench it is exactly right.

What remains is the ordinary desktop. The interface, the file browser, the driver model, the network stack and the application compatibility are all unchanged, so ordinary desktop applications install and run normally. A recovery environment is included on the image, and the whole thing writes to a USB stick with any standard imaging tool.

Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Back up everything on the target machine, since this is a clean install only.
  2. Write the image to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger with a standard imaging tool.
  3. Check first that the applications this machine has to run do not depend on removed frameworks.
  4. Boot from the stick and choose the superlite or compact build at the start of setup.
  5. Install chipset, graphics and network drivers from the hardware vendor after first boot.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Can removed components be added back?
Generally no. Removal is done in the image itself, so a full reinstall is the way back.
Will every application run?
Ordinary desktop applications will. Anything depending on the removed frameworks will not install.
Is an upgrade path available?
No. This is a clean install only.
What does the compact build change?
It compresses the system files, trading a little processor time for a noticeably smaller footprint.
