Overview

About Red Giant Universe

Universe is a plugin collection rather than an application, and it installs into the timeline editors and compositors already on the machine. Once registered, its transitions, effects and generators appear in the host's own effect list and are applied and keyframed exactly like the built-in ones, which is why it fits into an existing edit without changing how anyone works.

The transitions are the part most people install it for. Glitch, light leak, wipe, glass, distortion and camera style transitions all come with enough parameters to stop them looking like a preset, and they render fast enough to scrub through in the timeline rather than needing a cache pass first. Presets give a starting point that then gets adjusted per shot.

The effects side covers looks and finishing. Film and video emulation, chromatic aberration, halation, glow, blur, sharpening, retro broadcast artefacts, colour treatments and stylised distortions all sit in the same set. The generators produce backgrounds, light rays, grids and animated shapes without needing a compositor for a simple element.

Rendering runs on the graphics card, which is the practical reason it stays usable on a long timeline. Effects preview at full quality in real time on a reasonable card, and final rendering is a fraction of the time a processor bound plugin would take. The collection installs across the common host applications from a single manager.

  • Film, video and broadcast emulation effects with grain, halation and artefacts
  • Glow, blur, sharpening, chromatic aberration and colour treatment effects
  • Generators producing backgrounds, light rays, grids and animated shapes
  • Graphics card rendering with real time preview on the timeline
  • Installs into the common timeline editors and compositors from one manager
  • Preset library on every effect with full parameter control underneath
  • Keyframing through the host application rather than a separate interface
Changes

Changed in version 2026.0.1

  • New transition and effect sets added to the collection
  • Faster rendering on current generation graphics hardware
  • Improved host compatibility with the newest editor releases
  • Better preset organisation in the browser
  • Reduced install footprint after shared component cleanup
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Close every host application before starting, including background processes.
  2. Disable real-time protection for the length of the install.
  3. Extract the archive to a short path and run setup as administrator.
  4. Select which host applications to install into during the component stage.
  5. Launch the host once afterwards and allow it to scan for new effects.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Which host applications are supported?
The common timeline editors and compositors. The installer detects what is present and offers each one.
Does it need a strong graphics card?
For real time preview, yes. A weaker card still renders, just without live scrubbing at full quality.
Do projects open on a machine without it?
The effects appear as missing on a machine that does not have the collection installed.
Are presets adjustable?
Fully. Every preset is just a starting point with the full parameter set underneath it.
