Overview

About Grass Valley EDIUS Pro

EDIUS built its reputation in broadcast rooms where the deadline is the next bulletin. The design priority is not the deepest effect set, it is that a timeline holding six formats at four resolutions and three frame rates plays back immediately without a conform or a transcode step first. On a fast machine that promise generally holds.

The editing model is keyboard driven and fast once learned. Trim modes cover ripple, roll, slip and slide from the keyboard, three point editing works the way anybody trained on a broadcast system expects, and the source browser mounts camera card structures directly so material is auditioned before it is ever imported.

Format support is unusually wide, which is the other half of the argument. Broadcast codecs, camera formats from several generations of hardware, mixed frame rates on one timeline, and proxy workflow for cutting on a laptop and finishing on a workstation with the same project file.

Finishing tools cover what news and event work actually needs rather than everything imaginable: primary colour correction with scopes, a titler with rolling and crawling text, multicam with up to sixteen angles, audio mixing with loudness metering to broadcast targets, and export presets aimed at delivery specifications rather than social platforms.

Feature set

What is included in this build

  • Real time playback of mixed formats, resolutions and frame rates on one timeline
  • Keyboard driven ripple, roll, slip and slide trimming with three point editing
  • Source browser mounting camera card structures without importing first
  • Multicam editing with up to sixteen synchronised angles
  • Primary colour correction with waveform and vectorscope monitoring
  • Titler with rolling and crawling text and broadcast safe areas
  • Audio mixer with loudness metering against broadcast delivery targets
  • Proxy workflow sharing one project file between laptop and workstation
Changes

Changed in version 9.20.3340

  • Additional camera formats added to the importer set
  • Faster timeline playback with many layers of colour correction
  • Improved hardware decode paths on current generation GPUs
  • Export preset list refreshed for current delivery specifications
  • Reduced project load times on long timelines
Installation

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

  1. Install the current graphics driver before starting setup.
  2. Disable real-time protection until installation completes.
  3. Extract the archive to a short path and run setup as administrator.
  4. Allow the bundled codec components to install when prompted.
  5. Reboot once, then set the project and render cache folders before starting work.
Real-time protection flags installers of this type on heuristics alone. Pause it before extracting and turn it back on once the install has finished and the application has been opened once.

Questions

Frequently asked about this title

Does mixed format footage need transcoding first?
No. That is the central design goal, and a timeline with several formats plays back without a conform step.
Can projects move to another editor?
Through interchange formats such as XML and AAF, with the usual loss of effect settings on the way across.
Is a capture card required?
No, but a supported card adds hardware monitoring output for a reference display.
How many audio tracks are supported?
Enough for event and broadcast mixing, with loudness metering against standard delivery targets.
