The partition tools built into the operating system can shrink a volume a little and extend one into space directly beside it, and that is roughly where they stop. The working model is a queue rather than immediate action. Operations are set up in the interface, reviewed as a pending list against a visual map of the drive, and only then applied. Anything that cannot be done while the system is running gets deferred to a boot time pass automatically, so a system volume can be resized without anyone working out how to do it from a recovery console.

Migration is the other common job. Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Back up anything important before any partition work, since the operations touch drive structures directly.
2. Disable real-time protection until the install has completed.
3. Extract the archive and run setup as administrator.
4. Build the bootable USB stick from within the application before it is needed rather than after.
5. Never interrupt power during an applied operation, especially a boot time pass.
