When a file goes missing the data is usually still on the drive. Deleting a file removes the pointer to it and marks the space as available, but the contents sit untouched until something else writes over them. Recovery software reads the raw surface, finds what the file system has forgotten, and rebuilds it while it is still intact.

Two scan modes cover the range of situations. The quick scan reads the file system structures and returns recently deleted files in seconds with their original names and folders intact. The deep scan ignores the file system entirely and reads the whole surface looking for recognisable file signatures, which takes hours on a large drive but recovers material from a formatted or corrupted volume.

Recovery covers more than accidental deletion. Formatted partitions, lost or deleted partitions, corrupted file systems that no longer mount, emptied recycle bins, failed transfers and drives that report as raw are all handled, and the file type filter with a preview pane means a specific document or photograph can be found without wading through thousands of recovered fragments.

The bootable environment is the part that matters when a machine will not start. It runs from a USB stick as a small self contained system, mounts the internal drives read only, and recovers to external storage without ever writing to the damaged volume. That is the correct procedure, because every write to a drive holding lost data risks destroying the thing being recovered.

Installation walkthrough

These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.

1. Never install onto the drive holding the lost data, since writing to it can overwrite what is being recovered.
2. Disable real-time protection until the install has completed.
3. Extract the archive and run setup as administrator, choosing a different drive as the install target.
4. Prepare the bootable USB stick from within the application if the machine will not start.
5. Always recover files to a separate drive, never back onto the source.
