Adobe Character Animator 2026
Puppet animation driven live by a webcam and a microphone, turning a layered artwork file into a character that moves and lip syncs as you perform.
About Adobe Character Animator 2026
Character Animator works on a simple premise that turns out to be startlingly effective: a layered artwork file becomes a puppet, and the puppet is driven by a performance rather than by keyframes. A webcam tracks head position, eyebrows, eyes and mouth shape, a microphone drives lip sync against a phoneme set, and the character reproduces all of it in real time on the stage.
Rigging happens by naming layers. A layer called left eye behaves as an eye, a group named mouth becomes the viseme set, and handles placed on limbs become draggable or physics driven. That naming convention means an illustrator can prepare a puppet in an ordinary drawing application without learning a rigging system, and adjustments happen by editing the artwork file rather than rebuilding anything.
Behaviours layer on top of the live capture. Physics gives hair, ears and clothing secondary motion that follows the head, walk cycles handle locomotion from a single control, triggers swap expressions or props on a key press, and the breathing and eye blink behaviours add the small idle motion that keeps a character from looking frozen between lines.
Recording is performance based and multi-take. A pass captures face and voice together, then a second pass adds arm movement over the top, and takes are trimmed and blended on a timeline. Output goes to a video file or straight into an editing timeline through dynamic link, and the live mode streams the character directly for broadcast use.
What is included in this build
- Live face capture driving head, eye, eyebrow and mouth movement from a webcam
- Automatic lip sync generating visemes from recorded or live audio
- Rigging by layer naming, so puppets are prepared in an ordinary drawing application
- Physics behaviours giving hair, clothing and props secondary motion
- Trigger system for swapping expressions, poses and props on a key press
- Walk cycles and idle behaviours including breathing and blinking
- Multi-take recording with trimming and blending on a timeline
- Live streaming output for broadcast plus dynamic link into an editing timeline
Changed in version 26.0.0.50
- Improved lip sync accuracy on fast speech
- Face capture made more stable in uneven lighting
- Additional starter puppets included with the installer
- Physics behaviour performance raised on complex puppets
- Reduced project load times on scenes with many puppets
Installation walkthrough
These steps assume a clean machine. If a previous release of the same application is present, deal with that first, since an overlapping install is the most common cause of a setup that stops halfway.
- Connect and test the webcam and microphone before installing.
- Disable real-time protection until setup has finished.
- Close all Adobe processes including background helpers.
- Run the installer as administrator and pick the interface language.
- Calibrate face capture in a well lit position on first launch.
